TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Chris Stewart, veteran play-by-play voice of University of Alabama basketball and baseball, has been named the state's top sportscaster for 2009 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). Stewart received his award from the organization last weekend when The NSSA and Hall of Fame hosted its 51st Annual Awards Program in Salisbury, N.C.

This is the fourth time Stewart has earned the honor from the NSSA, and the third consecutive year he has been so honored, having previously been named Alabama's Sportscaster of the Year for 2004, 2007 and 2008. Currently in his 22nd year in broadcasting, Stewart recently concluded his eighth season as the University of Alabama men's basketball play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide Sports Network. In addition to his role as the voice of Crimson Tide basketball, Stewart is also the lead announcer for Alabama baseball.

Others honored during the NSSA program were Hall of Fame inductees Peter Gammons and John Madden, as well as the national sportscaster of the year, Jim Nantz (CBS Sports), and Bob Ryan (The Boston Globe) as sportswriter of the year.

Among the other NSSA state sportscasters of the year were Ohio's Marty Brennaman (Cincinnati Reds), Georgia's Wes Durham (Georgia Tech and Atlanta Falcons), Mike Keith of Tennessee (Tennessee Titans), and Woody Durham of North Carolina (UNC Tar Heels).

During the college football season, the Fairfield native handles television play-by-play duties for Alabama's pay-per-view and delayed broadcasts on CSS. He also hosts CTSN's pre-game and post-game radio shows. Stewart also worked eight seasons as the play-by-play announcer for Birmingham-Southern College.

A 1992 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Stewart is married to the former Christy Carmichael, and is the father of two children, Anne and Parker.
